Rotary Las Vegas Night and 8 more events along the North Strand
Gigantic plastic cards sway overhead displaying the names of the sponsors of the annual Las Vegas Night that Rotary Club of Shallotte presents. Now in its 13 th year, it will take place Jan. 27 at Planet Fun! in Shallotte, N.C. “It’s always the weekend before the Super Bowl,” says Vince Bacchi, chairman of the event for the past 10 years.
More than 600 people attended the 2017 Las Vegas Night and the Rotarians expect that number to increase this year. A sit-down dinner catered by Starz Grille includes hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, filet mignon, roast pork, pasta, vegetables, salad, cake, tea and coffee. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available at a cash bar.
“We go all out in food. We go all out in decorations. We go all out in everything,” Bacchi says.
Blackjack, craps, roulette, Texas Hold ’Em, horse racing and Rotary Wheel of Fortune are among the games played. Unlike other casinos, all participants at Las Vegas Night win and all proceeds benefit charities. Everyone gets a door prize valued from $15 to $50. A silent auction includes items worth $100 and more. Quilts, wine baskets, free services, jewelry and vacation packages are a few of the selections. The live auction consists of eight to 10 high-end items, and the night ends with a grand prize. For every $5,000 in Monopoly money, the person receives a ticket for the Grand Prize. “You don’t gamble for real money,” Bacchi says.
The group received $45,000 in sponsorships in 2017. “We help the charities that help the underserved,” Bacchi says. The three dozen club members volunteer their services, and the 50,000 square feet at Planet Fun provide the venue. “We’re putting on a show,” Bacchi says. “Our job is to put on the best show possible.”
Tickets are available by calling 910-755- 7557, 910-842- 1658 or at www.shallotterotaryclub.com.
