CALABASH, N.C. Nancy Smith says she founded Carolina Soul Festival to celebrate healthy living. “Let’s bring like-minded people together and exchange information and ideas,” she says from Movement Works, the fitness studio on U.S. 17 in Calabash, N.C. she opened three years ago.
Vegetarian friendly food trucks, musical entertainment with Four Miles South, Mr. 50’s and the trio Chicago Bob, Digger T and Bobby Liddell; Polynesian Fire Dancers, medieval knights sword circle, belly dancer Izdihar Raks and Kids Zone are a few of the attractions.
Fitness demonstrations include Zumba, yoga, piloxing, pump and tap dancing. A psychic medium and crystal healer will be there. The Vender Village has skin care products, jewelry and clothing. Check Six Brewery Company in Southport, N.C. and Unique Pairings in Calabash will serve their specialties. Healthy baked goods will be available as well. “We have a diversity of vendors,” Smith says.
Brunswick County Animal Services, Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary, Lower Cape Fear Hospice and other nonprofits will be on the premises. “We are bringing unique eclectic groups together [at Carolina Soul Festival],” Smith says.
Smith believes movement is essential to good health, and her mission is to spread that philosophy. She founded Community Movement Alliance, which provides movement-based education to underserved school children in Brunswick and surrounding counties. She and other teachers have taught yoga and tai chi in some Brunswick County Schools.
“We were ecstatic to have Nancy approach us with this unique opportunity,” Molly White, principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Leland, N.C. writes in an email. “Our kids took her instruction seriously and truly enjoyed it as one of our ‘Friday Clubs.’”
Helen Otto, was principal of Jesse Mae Monroe Elementary School in Ash, N.C. when Community Movement Alliance teachers came to the school. “[Movement-based education] is a great way for the students to learn various skills while building confidence and experiencing new ways of expression,” she writes in an email. Now principal of Virginia Williamson Elementary School in Bolivia, N.C., she adds, “I am going to reach out to hold the same programs here at Virginia Williamson.”
Smith purchased yoga mats for the students with a grant to CMA from ATMC and promotes tolerance, exposure to cultural arts and awareness of a wide world of cultures.
She wants visitors to have fun at the Festival but also “to get information on how to be their healthiest self,” she says. All proceeds from Carolina Sun Festival benefit CMA.
