Broadway at the Beach has something for all ages

Broadway at the Beach is a family attraction that appeals to people of all ages, while incorporating a night life that makes the complex well rounded. As for things to do in Myrtle Beach, Broadway is great place for individuals, families, friends, and anyone looking for a good time.

With 148 different things to do between restaurants, shops, and entertainment, it can be difficult to decide what places you should spend time at during your vacation in Myrtle Beach. Below is a short history of the complex as well as our lists for things to do with kids, amusements, where to go for the nightlife, theaters, and where to get sweets.

History of Broadway at the Beach

Opening in May of 1995, Broadway at the Beach has been in operation for 21 years. Developers Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc. announced plans for the project in 1993, with a grand opening on July 4, 1995.

The first attractions to open in the complex included the Hard Rock Cafe and the Palace Theatre.

Since then there have been many additions, making Broadway a well rounded place to visit. Today, Broadway at the Beach is the number one visited attraction in South Carolina.

For the Kids

If you’re traveling with kids then you know how difficult it can be to keep them entertained. At Broadway at the Beach there are many options that will keep both you and your kids having a good. While there are many interesting and fun options, here is our top five list of things to do with kids while in the area.

1. WonderWorks 

Find your world turned upside down when you visit WonderWorks, which found its place in Myrtle Beach after an experimental tornado went very wrong. Be prepared to enjoy learning through interactive stations that will lead you through scientific wonders as well as physical ones. WonderZones include Natural Disasters, Physical Challenge, Light & Sound, Space Discovery, Imagination Lab, and Far Out Art Gallery. During your journey throughout WonderWorks, you will also be able to experience the Indoor Ropes Challenge, the Laser Tag Arena, and the 6D Extreme Theater.

2. Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Get the full beach experience by checking out some of the ocean’s most interesting animals at Ripley’s Aquarium. As you walk through various exhibits  you will explore different parts of the world such as coral reefs, the Rio Amazon, and many more! Learn about the animals that live there as well as how they work together in their own environments. On top of viewing the exhibits guests can get interactive by diving with sharks, swimming with stingrays, and riding on a glass-bottomed boat. Check out the event calendar before you plan your visit to see if the aquarium has anything special the day of your trip!

3. Dragon’s Lair Fantasy Golf 

Find yourself in the land of Myrtleness which was recently devastated by an earthquake. Thanks to the help of the magician Avalon, Myrtleness is now on its way to being restored. As you putt your way through the 36 hole mini-golf course, you will meet Avalon’s protective fire-breathing dragon, climb aboard a Viking ship, and of course, explore the castle. Hours vary depending on the season, so check out their website for more information and to purchase tickets.

Dinosaurs the Exhibition

Enter into the time of the dinosaurs as you embark at Dinosaurs the Exhibition. Take a ride on either a T-Rex or a Triceratops, let your inner paleontologist out as you dig for bones, and learn all about the creatures that once inhabited our planet. The exhibit is only open between March 1st and October 1st, so be sure to check it out before it closes for the winter!

5. Broadway Grand Prix

Are you and your kids up for a thrill ride? Broadway Grand Prix offers a rock wall, two 18-hole mini golf courses, seven go-kart tracks, a sky coaster, bumper cars, and an arcade. If you’re traveling with younger kids there are rides and race tracks sized just for them. With food options and ice cream, Broadway Grand Prix is all day fun for the whole family. Make sure you check out the website for their hours, as they are a seasonal attraction.

For the Thrill Seeker

Are  you looking to challenge yourself mentally and even physically? Are you just looking for that thrill? Broadway at the Beach offers multiple experiences that will allow you to challenge yourself or your family. Here is our top four list of places where you can get your thrill on.

1. Backstage Escape Games, The Vault Laser Maze, and Backstage Mirror Maze

Backstage Escape Games offers three different challenges for you to complete, the Backstage Escape Games, the Vault Laser Maze, and the Backstage Mirror Maze. Backstage Escape Games allows you to work with others as you work to align the Atlantean power crystals in the Temple of Poseidon. After they are aligned, human existence as we know it will be forever changed and Atlantis will once again be great.

In the Vault Laser Maze you will become the bank robber. Guide yourself through the lasers as you try to escape before the New York Police come to arrest you! If you touch a laser an alarm will sound and time will be added to your final score. The game is fun for all ages with four different difficulty levels.

Find yourself lost and confused as you explore the Backstage Mirror Maze. You will be located in an Off Broadway backstage area as you attempt to stop the New York mafia who just completed a bank heist next door. Can you make your way through the maze to return the money to its owners?

2.  WonderWorks Soar + Explore

Soar across Broadway as you experience a 50 foot zip line that travels 1,000 feet, as well as a ropes course. The ropes course is 40 feet off the ground, and guests will make their way through 33 obstacles. As you make your way through the course it becomes more difficult, making it a fun family competition.

3. Beach Rider Jet Boat

Are you looking for the ultimate thrill? With the Beach Rider Jet Boat you will ride through the middle of Broadway making waves and drawing attention through high speed maneuvers. With all ages above three allowed on the boat, the ride is fun for the whole family.

4. Pavilion Park – East, Central, West

Enjoy nostalgic rides as you walk through Broadway. With three different parks scattered throughout shops and restaurants, Pavilion Park will take adults back to their childhoods. If you are traveling with young children head to West Pavilion Park where there are rides that are more their size. With rides that are tame and rides that are for thrill seekers there is something for everybody at Pavilion Park.

For the Dancers

If you’re looking for a fun night on the town then Broadway at the Beach is the place for you. Whether you’re looking for a bar to hang out with friends or you’re wanting to shake off the day, Broadway has it all. Here is our list of top two places to go dancing.

1. Senor Frog’s

No matter your age Senor Frog’s is a fun to place to dance and to hang out with friends. Not only is the restaurant for dancing, they host contests, Karaoke, as well as providing live music and DJs. Get taken away to the Caribbean as you dance the night away!

2. Malibu’s Surf Bar

Enjoy a laid-back beach atmosphere as you dance or hang out at the bar. With dual DJs it’s a party that you won’t want to miss. If you find yourself hungry after all of the dancing check out The Tiki Bar, which is also open for happy hour where you will have the opportunity to people watch and enjoy acoustic music.

For the Theatre Goers 

If you are more of the theater type, Broadway at the Beach has many options whether you are looking for a live show or a movie theatre. Here is our top three list of theaters in the area.

1. Palace Theatre

Whether you are looking for broadway theatre productions, live entertainment shows or musicals, the Palace Theatre has is the place for you. Check out their calendar to see what shows will be playing when you are in the area and make sure that you don’t miss one of the best spots for live entertainment.

2. Legends in Concert

Are you tired of missing your favorite artists, or wish that there was someone that you could have seen during their lifetime? Legends in Concert recreates artists’ concerts with performers who look and sound like the original artist. Special effects are included to make the concert as true to the original as possible. Along with the performers, dancers and a live orchestra are present at each show. Check out the schedule to see when your favorite artist is set to perform.

3. Big D Theater

Are you are looking for 2D or 3D entertainment? Carmike’s Big D Theater offers both of these options as well as new movies and your favorite summer blockbusters.

For the Sweet Tooth

Do you have a sweet tooth or looking for that perfect late night snack? Here is our list of the top two places to get your sweet on at Broadway at the Beach.

1. Wee-R-Sweetz

While Wee-R-Sweetz offers everything from chocolates, apples, fudge, nuts, and many more, they are mainly known for the salt water taffy. With machines that are over 90 years old, Wee-R-Sweetz draws you in with the smell of candy that is made from scratch. Stop by to watch the taffy be made before your eyes and even sample some pieces before you buy a box!

2.  It’Sugar

At It’Sugar you will have the opportunity to choose from many different options including sour, sweet, and chocolate. It’s Sugar will also take you back in time, offering you your favorite candies from when you were a kid.
