Local living like a tourist visits Stage Left Theatre in Myrtle Beach

Having “grown up” with Saturday Night Live, I was looking forward to seeing Stage Left Theatre’s version called “Myrtle Beach Live.”

A large group of players from Carolina Improv Company decided to go visit on a Saturday night, and it was a fun night of locals supporting locals in the Myrtle Beach SC area.

I had wanted to attend the theater for a long time and was not sure what to expect from a local theatre company, but I was very pleasantly surprised and laughed my way through the show.  Amber McCann, Artistic Director, and the cast, including her two sons, are very funny.  Who knew a CPA could write comedy?

The show opened with the cast’s pictures imposed on scenes from Myrtle Beach on an overhead screen, which I thought was very clever.  The first skit, “How to survive a horror movie,” was made up of several vignettes illustrating what not to do in scary situations. “Victims” got a do-over to demonstrate what the actor should have done the first time.

Some of the other skits consisted of buying emotions from “Emotions R Us;” a couple celebrating their 20 year anniversary going back in time to their first date, using voices from behind the stage letting us know what they were really thinking; patrons driving through many different fast food restaurants; and a candidate lying at a job interview.

The show also included a cabaret singer. Callie Barfield did a nice job performing songs from Adele and Imagine Dragon. Rounding out the show was the News Update, where comedians provided their own spin on current events.

Stage Left Theatre just completed its first season in the Deville Street Theatre in The Market Common behind Gordon Biersch. The shows range from known plays to original works.  To see a list of upcoming shows, go to Stage Left Theatre.
