Restaurants and roaches? Inspectors find this week’s worst offender in Horry Co., SC

A Horry County restaurant received this month’s lowest score during a routine health inspection when officials found insects, dirty surfaces and food stored at improper temperatures, according to a state report.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control conducts inspections every month and scores establishments based on their practices.

Inspectors awarded the lowest score from Sept. 1 through Sept. 10 to Bojangles on Main Street in Loris. It scored a 75% or “C” during a routine inspection on Sept. 7.

Inspectors found an employee’s drink without a lid in the kitchen, according to the state report.

A hand sink for employees was stopped up and unusable, and inspectors observed unclean surfaces on the drink spouts of beverage machines. They also reported an “unclean top interior” of the drive thru’s ice bin.

Inspectors deducted points for improper hot holding temperatures and cold holding temperatures for food.

Flies were spotted in the dining room and kitchen, and a live roach in the kitchen.

Employees also stored kitchen utensils in standing water.

Inspectors documented a damaged counter and the walk-in cooler was not set to the proper temperature, they said.

Kitchen shelves were soiled with grease, and the insides of kitchen sinks and refrigerators were dirty.

Walls and floors in some areas of the restaurant were also dirty, according to the report.

An employee with the restaurant declined to comment on the inspection score.

A follow up inspection is required within the next 10 days of inspection.
