This year, a second Myrtle Beach Area Restaurant Week is being planned for June 2-8, timed to coincide with the Coastal Uncorked food and wine festival.
It’s the first year the area has scheduled two restaurant weeks, organized by the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association.
Only about a dozen Grand Strand restaurants participated in the 11-day South Carolina Restaurant Week that wrapped up Sunday, which always falls in January aiming to showcase the state’s culinary offerings and boost business during a traditionally slower time of year statewide.
But along the Grand Strand, things are really slow in January – so slow many restaurants shut down for extensive cleaning or remodeling. That translates into only a fraction of the 1,700 area eateries participating by offering special menu items, promotions or discounts.
Part of the catalyst behind holding a second event is that it will take place during a busier time of year at the beach when more restaurants can participate.
Adding a second week in early June should give more restaurants a chance to participate and help jumpstart the busy summer season, said Stephen Greene, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association.
