A modern twist on southern but definitely all comfort, Southern Comforts in Pawleys Island is a bakery that offers a lot more than just sweets. The cake cooler in the front of the restaurant will certainly make it difficult to think of anything else, but the team behind the counter is ready to serve up a lot more.

Depending on the weather, guests may decide to sit on the porch where there is an umbrella over each table. Inside, the walls are accented with cheerful colors and beach-themed art along with the wooden floors underneath that creak like an old pier.

Southern Comforts prides themselves on not only cooking everything fresh but also using locally supplied ingredients. Regulars dropping by know what to expect, but any new arrivals may find themselves pleasantly surprised by the selection on the menu. This includes the daily specials, like the restaurant’s award-winning shrimp and grits.

The starters begin with homemade goodies like pimento cheese or a daily hummus. These shareable appetizers come on a plate filled with the restaurant’s own bread. Southern Comforts also makes their own Saratoga chips and pretzels.

Soups, salads, and sandwiches make up the rest of the menu but with enough variety to warrant looking over each item. There’s the daily soup, like their savory cream of mushroom soup, and the Pawleys Island stew. Veggie-lovers will enjoy the crisp salads, such as the Chicken Waldorf or the Shrimp Louis salad topped with local shrimp.

Burgers and sandwiches come on one of the nine house breads and with a side, such as quinoa or cucumber salad. The smoked Gouda and pear chicken sandwich is a delicious conglomeration of tastes, with some sweetness from the pear and a bit of kick from the red pepper jam.

The dinner menu adds a number of entrees that keeps in line with the eatery’s theme of southern comfort, all of which also come with your choice of sides. Dinner meals include favorites like meatloaf, pot roast, buttermilk fried chicken, and local fish such as grouper and flounder. The evening is also a great time to enjoy one of the bar’s unique cocktails.

Southern Comforts has become known for their cakes, especially since they also prepare desserts for events, from a classic layered cake to an extravagant carved cake creation. To make parties even better, the restaurant offers catering with plenty of flexibility such as providing gluten free and vegetarian options.

With an atmosphere mirroring their name, Southern Comforts provides not just good food for the area but also hospitality for everyone who walks through the doors. With so much to offer, made even better with fresh and local food at decent prices, this bakery ought to make itself comfortable in Pawleys Island.

Seafood fans know they’re in for a treat when the catch of the day catches their eye before they even make it to the table. This month, The Flying Fish will be celebrating their eighth anniversary in North Myrtle Beach.

First-time guests will notice right away that the restaurant also is a market, with some of that day’s haul on display, including entire fish on ice gazing woefully through the glass. This fresh food is one of the many reasons The Flying Fish is so popular, with the business promising less than 48 hours between boat and plate.
