A golf course closed for more than seven years may re-open for players in the near future.

The property owners of Brierwood Golf Course at 27 Brierwood Road SW in Shallotte, N.C., submitted an application for special use in December 2024. The Town of Shallotte provided The Sun News with a copy of the application.

The plan calls for re-opening holes 1 through 9 on the course and restoring the tennis courts. The application also calls for re-opening the clubhouse and restaurant.

Kevin Blum owns the course through the Blum Investment Group Golf LLC. Blum did not return a request for comment from The Sun News before publication.

Shallotte’s Board of Alderman will consider the special use permit at a March 4, 2025 public hearing. According to Blum Investment Group Golf LLC’s application, the Board of Alderman must approve special uses.

The initial plan for re-opening the course was more ambitious than its final version.

Submitted Dec. 2, 2024, the special use permit included indoor/outdoor pickleball, kids park and swimming pool as additional uses. In an email to The Sun News, Town of Shallotte Planner II Brandon Eaton wrote that the applicant removed these additional uses in its final submitted plans.

Grander designs for the course have not come to fruition before.

Before closing in 2017, Blum tried adding different amenities and businesses to the course. In a 2017 interview with The Sun News, Blum said he considered proposals ranging from an RV Park to a hotel for the property.

Blum added during that 2017 interview that none of those plans received positive responses from the surrounding community or local governments and thus went nowhere.

“There aren’t too many golf courses that make it just like golf courses. There has to be something else,” Blum said in May 2017. “We tried to make it a community course, but the community support wasn’t enough. There are a lot of locals that come here, but it’s not enough.”

Blum bought the course in 2014 for $1.25 million. By the time it closed, Brierwood had 70 members. The 6,643-yard Brierwood opened in 1967 and at one time had an art museum.
