The first PGA tournament in Grand Strand history has a start date.
The Myrtle Beach Classic will begin May 6 and run through May 12, according to a PGA Tour press release Aug. 7.
The Myrtle Beach tournament will take place at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, and the course is set to hold tournaments through 2027, according to a previous report by The Sun News.
The Dunes is located at 9000 North Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach.
Dennis Nicholl is the Head Golf Professional at The Dunes, and he said the course was honored to host the event.
“We’re just looking forward to next May,” Nicholl said. “It’s going to be great for the whole town and community.”
The Dunes has undergone renovations to prepare for the tournament. Nicholl said the championship tee boxes were laser leveled and re-sodded.
The chipping green was upgraded, as well as a second chipping green was built. The Dunes also enlarged the size of the putting green. Nicholl added the course has also updated its parking lot, locker room and ponds on holes 1, 10 and 18.
The Myrtle Beach Classic will be played at the same time as the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Wyndam Clark won the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.
Charlotte will host the top 65 ranked professional golfers in the PGA. Myrtle Beach will host golfers ranked 66 through 170, and the tournament will award 300 FedEx Cup points to the winner.
The tournament has a $3.9 million purse, the winner of the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic will receive $702 thousand, or 18 percent of the total prize money. The Dunes has previously hosted the U.S. Women’s Open, PGA Tour Q-Schools finals and other tournaments.
