The readers have voted. Here is their favorite golf course in the Myrtle Beach area.
Locals and visitors alike voted for their favorite golf course in the Grand Strand, and the results are in.
The best in the Myrtle Beach area according to The Sun News readers is Prestwick Country Club. Prestwick received 43 out of 329 votes, 13 percent of the total ballots cast.
Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach finished with the second most votes, and Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach finished with the third most. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club on Pawleys Island came in fourth, and Wedgefield Country Club in Georgetown finished in fifth place.
Designed by Pete and P.B. Dye, the architects of other popular South Carolina courses like The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Prestwick offers players an action-packed experience.
“We keep the greens at a really pretty quick pace year-round,” General Manager and Head Golf Professional Jay Smith said. “A lot of the golfers really enjoy that. They know when they come here, they’re going to putt on smooth, fast greens.”
Smith said each hole has six sets of tees for players to choose from to ensure golfers “have a great time” at the 72-par course.
“The design of the golf course makes you hit about every club in your bag,” he added. “You hit a lot of different shots (which) makes you use your imagination when you’re playing.”
Smith’s favorite hole is the par five hole nine. With water all along the left side of the hole and mounds on the right, players who make it through those obstacles will face a green surrounded by sand traps designed to add strokes to their score.
“You’ve got to use your brain,” he added. “A lot of people go in the water, me included, I’ve done it. You just have to play it smart.”
Aside from the golf, Prestwick also has a restaurant for players finished with their game. Menu items include coconut shrimp, chicken wings, several burgers and sandwiches, fried fish and fried shrimp.
Despite having ‘country club’ in the name, Prestwick does not have a membership and anyone can play the links Smith said. Prospective players can book their tee times on the course’s website, call the pro shop or use a golf packaging service; Smith added.
Prestwick Country Club is located at 1001 Links Road in Myrtle Beach. Tidewater Golf Club is located at 1400 Tidewater Drive in North Myrtle Beach.
Dunes Golf & Beach Resort is located at 9000 North Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club is located at 369 Caledonia Drive. Wedgefield Country Club is located at 129 Club House Lane in Georgetown
More than 60 golf courses were listed in the original poll. The poll picked courses from the Visit Myrtle Beach Website.
