Setting the Table

Stormy seas have never looked better at Captain Juel’s Hurricane on the Waterfront in Little River. Capt. Juel’s has quite a history, having been established in 1945, and has been a beloved spot by locals and tourists throughout all those decades. The building has been renovated to keep up with the times, but also retains some old decorations from its inception, and all of the charm.

The inside is spacious with multiple areas to eat, including a gorgeous full bar and even a sushi bar, plus some outdoor seating on the patio overlooking the water. The restaurant is also wheelchair accessible, which is a considerate touch. The tables are topped with paper, so when guests leave, the messes are easy to clean up, drawings and all.

Down the Hatch

Capt. Juel’s has a lunch, dinner, sushi, and drink menu so there are a lot of food options to explore. There is seafood galore and a healthy mixing of Southern dishes, like their fried green tomatoes and their award-winning shrimp and grits. Sandwiches, soups, and salads are options for those not interested in a platter, including a few options for landlubbers.

Among their sandwiches are burgers and po’ boys, and they also have multiple fish options that swim between buns, such as the mahi sandwich. This delicious meal is fresh blackened mahi with provolone and grilled onions sandwiched in a brioche bun that is hard to stop eating.

Other popular meal choices include the fish tacos that have just enough spice to pleasantly tingle the tongue. All of Capt. Juel’s tacos and wraps come with their homemade chips and salsa on the side, and just like all of their other impressive food, those chips are hard to ignore.

Check, Please

As is expected from lunch menus, the midday prices are slightly cheaper, while the dinner meals cost just a bit more. The seafood entrees are worth the prices, considering the fresh ingredients and skill the meals are prepared with. During lunch, two meals and drinks were under $30 before adding the tip.

After a cruise on the inlet, Capt. Juel’s is one of the many restaurants to welcome sunburned parties of all sizes. They open every day at 11 a.m. and keep sailing through until 1 a.m. or later, except for Sundays when they’re closed. Happy Hour lasts from 4 to 7 p.m. at the bar only, where adults can enjoy $4 well drinks and $3 beers, plus half-priced sushi.

Captain Juel’s Hurricane is one of the oldest restaurants on the Grand Strand and runs like a well-kept ship. The restaurant can get busy quickly, but as a family-run business, Capt. Juel’s will do whatever it takes to take care of you and your crew.
