THE LOWDOWN

$2.75 for a beer in Myrtle Beach on Ocean Boulevard? How about $2.75 for a beer in Myrtle Beach with a view of Ocean Boulevard, a view of the Atlantic Ocean, live music playing in the background, tourists making their way to the boardwalk and an occassional volleyball game? That’s what you get when visiting the historic Bowery and Duffy’s Tavern between Ocean Boulevard and the beach. The Bowery is a 72-year-old business that’s still kickin’ and still home to some great live country music. It’ll be hopping this weekend during the Carolina Country Music Festival. Its regular Happy Hour specials run from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and include $1.50 draft, $3 house drinks, and, what they call, “lousy” food. From customer reaction, it doesn’t seem too lousy. Happy Hour specials include $2 Kenny’s Killer Nachos, $2 Vic’s Fab Fries, $3 Pistol Pete’s Pickled Pepper Rings, $3 Double D’s Dill Chips and more. The Bowery made some renovations in the off-season by creating a half wall where the saloon is located, which allows patrons to sit in the saloon, listen to the live band, and catch the ocean breeze.

TIPS

The world famous Bowery is open seven days a week and holds a place in Myrtle Beach’s entertainment history, as it was home to country superstars Alabama from 1973 to 1980. Its house band now, The Bounty Hunters, will open Carolina Country Music Festival, which will be held directly across the street from the landmark, on June 9. Their beer is not refridgerated, it’s iced down. They’ve built their history serving mills workers from the Carolinas and Georgia, but built their modern business on entertaining tourists and locals with live music each night at 8:30 p.m. and special guest bands on Sunday night.
