Point/Counterpoint | Tourist drivers: Give ‘em a break or learn the rules of the road?

If you haven’t noticed heavier traffic on the weekends, well then you either work too much or you’re bed-ridden.

With the added traffic comes added excuses of why you’re late to work, added fits of road rage and, for some, added cuss words to the vocabulary. We sometimes need a reminder to be a little ore patient when defensively driving around the majority of drivers who are unfamiliar to roads throughout the Grand Strand.

So as we all deal with the added traffic congestion, we took the question to our debaters: Tourist drivers: Give ‘em a break or learn the rules of the road?

Give ‘em a break

We’re dealing with first-time drivers in our area (or even the ones who have been here before, but haven’t committed to memory the intricacies of why the hell 3rd Avenue South was designed the way it was.) We need to be forgiving, while being defensive, drivers this time of year through the fall.

After all, we’re dealing mostly with families who are trying to enjoy our area during their vacation. Give them a break as they navigate their way through our sometimes confusing road system.

Learn the rules of the road

Give ‘em a break? Give ME a break! I’ve personally seen drivers zoom three lanes, THREE LANES, within less than half a block to make a right turn on 16th Avenue North. And I’M supposed to put myself in the”Forgive them, they don’t know the roads here” role? No way.

There are basic rules of the road. If you need to turn right, gradually work your way to the right lane, using proper turning signals, and then make your turn. You are behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and I am to assume that your state has rules of the road tests that you’ve passed in order to legally drive that car or truck.

This is just another excuse that vacationers use to feel entitled while visiting our area. This attitude of “You should treat me like royalty because I’m pumping money in your economy” has got to go. We’re one of the biggest car accident states in the U.S., and much of that can be attributed to these types of drivers.
