On the Fly | Let the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras events commence along the Grand Strand

Flappers & Gangsters Party

Not to be outdone, Pine Lakes Tavern is hosting a Flappers & Gangsters party February 4 at 9 p.m. You are encouraged to dress in the 20s and 30s style, though if you dress like that on a normal basis, probably don’t come. You and fellow gang members will enjoy the music of the critically acclaimed “9th Street Stompers”, a four-piece swingin’ hot jazz and blues band from Chattanooga, Tenn.

No cover charge, but a password is suggested (though not required) for authenticity purposes. Try “sasparilla.”

Super Bowl

So we all know there’s a big game going on this week. That’s right, the long-awaited Pro Bowl is here, and — oh wait that was Sunday? Oh. Well no biggie, there’s ANOTHER game coming up that’s almost just as good, known as the SUPER BOWL, between various different players who couldn’t make the Pro Bowl.

Cam Newton and the Panthers will take on Peyton Manning and the Broncos in Santa Clara February 7 at 6:30 p.m. for Super Bowl 50, featuring a lot of dancing, smog, and yelling of the word “Omaha.” The game will undoubtedly be on every single channel everywhere everywhere everywhere, so if you’re not watching it at home, just walk outside five feet in any direction and chances are you’ll see it.

Marshi Gras on the MarshWalk

See what we did there is, we replaced the “D” in Mardi Gras” with an “SH” to form the word “Marshi Gras,” an ode to the “Marsh Walk.” You get it.

Join the parade and celebrate Big Boned Tuesday at this year’s Marshi Gras on the MarshWalk! A Costume Contest Parade lead by the Marshi Gras King and Queen kicks things off, and the parade will be accompanied by The Land of Dixie Band playing Mardi Gras-style music.

The winners of the contest will be announced at the end of the parade, and bring your change jar because they’re giving away over $1,000 in cash and prizes! Get dolled up, head down to the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk and in the immortal words of The Cars, let the good times roll! Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Be there or be…not…there.

Parade Route: The Wicked Tuna to Bovines

- Prior to the start of the contest, you must register at The Wicked Tuna between 5 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. to be eligible for the contest.

- The King, Queen and Band will lead the parade.

- Anyone is allowed to join in the parade (at the beginning or along the way), but only those registered will be considered for the giveaways.

- The winners will be announced at 8.30 p.m. at Bovines.

Celebration Swap:

All guests are encouraged to come dressed in their best Mardi Gras themed attire, but for those who don’t or can’t, each bar will be giving away celebration swag including masks, tiaras, beads, and more.

Each restaurant will have special menu items for the event with a Louisiana flair. Drink specials will run throughout the evening at each bar.

Bourbon Street Fat Tuesday Party

Had enough? Well too bad, because Bourbon Street is throwing their Husky Tuesday party Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. The party will feature live entertainment with The Grocery Store Gentlemen, (price check on aisle three?) beads, grenade drinks, free giveaways, and much more. Spread the word and get festive with Bourbon Street.

Dick’s Last Resort Mardi Gras Parade

Enough in the tank for one more? OK let’s go. Dick’s Last Resort is also celebrating Mardi Gras with a parade at Dick’s Last Resort! The parade begins at 5 p.m. and ends at Dick’s Last Resort where the after party will begin.
