Are you dreaming of a solid red Christmas?

As the weather cools off around the nation and even here in the Carolinas, nothing’s better than a nice cup of Joe to warm you up from the inside out.

That is, if you only drink out of a solid colored cup, right? Or does it matter?

This week, we look at the controversial move of Starbucks to opt out of celebrating the holidays with designs on their coffee cups and their choice to go with straight red. Should it matter what a coffee house does with its cups at the holidays?

Yes it does

We have become a society who backs down from any controversy. We’re wimps, and this new battle over the design of Starbucks’ coffee cup goes to prove that mega companies are walking on egg shells, as well. According to a 2013 Pew Research poll, nine-in-ten Americans say they celebrate Christmas. So what’s wrong with a wreath or two, or a snowflake on the side of my cup to signify a joyous time of year for so many?

The brilliant folks at Dunkin’ Donuts have responded with their holiday cup. So when it comes to relaxing with a warm cup of caffeine this holiday season, I just may get addicted to the company that sees the important holiday the same way I do. After all, I just ordered my last cup of coffee from Starbucks and told them my name was “Merry Christmas.”

No it doesn’t

Giving a damn about what design is on the side of my quick-service coffee cup is like basing my choice for President of the United States by which NFL football team they root for. It’s stupid.

When I’m ordering coffee, I want fresh coffee with a perfect blend of creamer. When I choose Starbucks, I know I’ll pay more and I know I’m paying for the freshness and taste. Complaining about what is on the cup they serve the coffee in is like complaining to Coca-Cola for not making one of those “Share a Coke” bottles with my name on it!

Don’t judge a coffee by its cover, but rather the contents of its cup.
