THE LOWDOWN

An intimate restaurant with a great back story is located in the heart of Murrells Inlet. Flo’s Place, situated on Restaurant Row, has a stunning view of the Inlet and a great menu of sandwiches, soups and seafood.

Much of the food is reminiscent of the food found in New Orleans, said Jennifer Jordan, a multi-tasking, long-time employee.

“The menu is Lowcountry seafood with a touch of New Orleans style dishes,” Jordan said.

The restaurant has dishes that are made from scratch, Jordan said.

This includes fried shrimp, po’ boy sandwiches, fried oysters and a special selection called the Captain’s Platter. The platter has a mixture of everything, according to Jordan.

“It has fantail shrimp, popcorn shrimp, oysters, scallops, deviled crab and mahi mahi,” she said. The platter comes with fries and Flo’s homemade coleslaw.

Other special dishes include shrimp creole, blackened fish, red beans and rice and a char-grilled seafood platter.

A full range of desserts are also available for munching.

The restaurant serves Key Lime pie, ice cream brownie and creme brulee.

The beer menu is going to the “craftier” side, Jordan said.

The beer selection includes Abita Jockamo, Abita Seasonals, Guiness, Stella, Corona and Corona Light.

Myrtle Beach-brewed beer includes New South Nut Brown and New South White Ale. A Georgia brewed beer, Red Hare Long Day Lager, is also available at Flo’s Place.

Domestic beers include Budweiser, Blue Moon and Miller Lite.

Flo’s Place has an interesting history, according to Jordan. Deb Griffin, the current owner, is Flo’s daughter. The restaurant has been located in the Inlet for 37 years.

The original Flo passed away in 2005, but information provided by the restaurant says that a “watchful eye is always in place over every recipe and every dish.”

The decor of Flo’s is suitably nautical, considering its location in a famous fishing village.

The “laundry baskets” used as light above the tables are shrimp baskets used by local fishermen.

The colors of purple, gold and green used in the restaurant stand for justice, power and faith.

Other information about the restaurant says that it wasn’t damaged during Hurricane Hugo, the original chef used “salty” language and Flo once drove a “Flo mobile” car.

The restaurant has extensive seating, both indoor and outdoor.

Despite the pouring rain, diners could still sit in an semi-enclosed area that offers them a view of Murrells Inlet.

The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with affordable prices in the $20 to $30 range for surf and turf and seafood platters.
