Hot Pour: South Africa native says Americans don’t drink fast enough
Bartender
▪ Peta Dabrowski, 31
Bar
▪ Rustic Table
You have a very distinct accent, where are you from? South Africa. I’ve been in America for about 11 years and in Pawleys Island for about seven years.
What brought you to the United States? I came here working country clubs in New York and Florida.
What do you miss most about South Africa? The food and rugby and the wildlife and the bars. The South African bars are crazy. Everyone has shots in front of them. People here don’t know how to drink fast enough. The drinks just pile up in front of them.
A couple of months ago, we featured your husband, John Dabrowski from Island Bar and Grill, as a Hot Pour bartender. When we talked to him, he said he flirts with 23-year-old women whenever he gets drunk. How do you feel about that? I’m fine with his flirting as long as he comes home to me. I’m also fine with all my flirting with the golf pros.
Can you drink John under the table? I have been known to do that with bourbon. I can also kick his ass at golf.
It seems like you have a fun relationship, but you both work so many hours and opposite schedules. How do you spend time together? Most of the time, we communicate via text message. On our days off, we golf and have Mexican Mondays at Habaneros and drink lots of margaritas. We also do a supper club once a month where we get together with our friends and go through a couple bottles of wine.
What is a supper club? We go a friend’s house, or they come to our house and have dinner. We also play Cards Against Humanity.
What are the worst cards you’ve seen played in Cards Against Humanity? Oh, I can’t say those. Even if I did, it couldn’t be published.
Is there anything you’ve always wanted to admit publicly but never had the chance? It’s cheesy, but I’d like to give a shout-out to Harding, the greatest farming town in South Africa, and my parents and brothers.
