THE LOWDOWN

The paint is still drying on the newly opened Drafts Sports Bar & Grill, having opened last Memorial Day weekend inside Westgate Resort.

The place shines with newly varnished wood. Classing up the joint a little more, exposed brick trims the wall. Windows wrap around dining room, giving views up and down Ocean Boulevard. Across the street, Family Kingdom flies by in a blur of lights at night and mingling crowds by day. Plans are already underway to connect a wrap-around patio, extending the seating to the oceanfront pool deck and fire pits.

It’s a great place to people watch, but maybe you want to escape for a little while. In that case, huge TVs tower over the tables, offering views from every seat in the house. There are long tables, small tables, bar seating and a cozy nook of booths. All of these seats are court-side or ringside or front-and-center to whatever sport you want to watch.

Footballs, basketballs and baseball bats represent various teams and hang in glass on the walls. Beside them are overly large baseball bats branded with Drafts’ logo. Everywhere, in frames, are great figures from every sport – Muhammad Ali, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Jordon, Eli Manning, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter, Wayne Gretzky and on and on. The allegiance here is to sports and sports alone.

As far as the bar is concerned, Drafts throw down more than 50 draft and bottled beers – imports, domestics and specialty microbrews. There are some nifty cocktails too and a broad wine list for a sports bar.

And the kitchen isn’t just churning out your ordinary bar grub. The menu is made up of gourmet burgers and sandwiches. There are some interesting angles on pub food like Tatchos (tater tot nachos), Fried Jalapeno Mac and Cheese. Fascinating twists on familiar recipes make the menu an appealing read.

We know this is all about happy hour, but Drafts also offers a full breakfast and we’d be remiss if we didn’t give you a heads up if you’re looking for a new spot to get your eggs on or throw down on some French toast.
