Gut Reaction: Craving crepes? You’ll have to head to Crepe Creation Cafe

Setting the table

When I heard there was an actual crepe restaurant in Myrtle Beach, it took me back to the Pawleys Island Inn days of Chef Louis Osteen and to the spinach crepes I have dreamed of since.

Walking into Crepe Creation Cafe at The Market Common, I first noticed extra small tables placed closely together with a lack of textiles anywhere. This somewhat industrial look seems to be a trend but isn’t really conducive to comfort. The restaurant was clean and neat, however.

The open kitchen allowed me to freely glance at what they were cooking and how items were prepared. A French theme was attempted in the decor.

Another trend that has been accepted for a number of years (and I don’t understand how it persists) is the habit of waiters squatting when taking an order or leaning back on an empty table or chair. I observed this behavior from my waiter when taking orders. I prefer a more professional demeanor.

Down the hatch

After looking at the pretty extensive menu, I ordered the Parisian, Cordon Bleu and Tuscan crepes along with a bacon waffle.

The Parisian was my favorite with the brie, apple slices, almonds and strawberry balsamic ($6.75). I love this menu item. I like my apple slices a little thinner on such a thin crepe but the brie was delicious. The Tuscan crepe was very Mediterranean with pesto and vegetables. Very good flavor in that one.

Other crepes on the menu include Cordon Bleu prepared with grilled chicken, Black Forest ham, Swiss and honey mustard ($7.25), the Florentine crepe (grilled chicken, mushrooms, onions, Swiss cheese and hollandaise for $7.75), Southern (seasoned chicken, bacon, cheeses for $7.25), and Steak Fromage ($7.75). Many of the crepes have Panini counterparts.

The breakfast crepes sounded sweet. Stuffed French toast crepes, Western morning crepes and Steak and eggs crepes ($5.50-$6.95). A few of the dessert crepes listed are Lemon Zest, Chocolate Dream and Blueberry Farm.

The “Create your own Panini or crepe” is a good menu idea. And the addition of Belgian waffles to this menu round-up was welcome. The bacon waffle with bananas was the second favorite dish I tried. Belgian waffles were $3.95 each plain … add fruit or more items for an additional charge.

Crepe Creation Café has a soup du jour for $5.25 and salads (small for only $3). The wine list and beer offerings were nice. The crepes can be made gluten-free for a dollar extra.

Check, please

I will try the Crepe Creation Café again. The prices are reasonable prices and where else can you get such a selection of crepes that you don’t have to prepare yourself? I just wish they were a little thicker.

I actually left a little hungry, amusingly, as if the crepes weren’t filled quite enough and the French pancakes could have been a slightly heavier.

My tab was $38.69 for two people.

Crepe Creation Café is located at 4012 Deville St. in Myrtle Beach. Call 843-839-4019. It’s open Sunday through Thursday 8 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
