Arizona Coach Becky Burke Addresses ‘Hate' After Revealing Baby News With Wife
University of Arizona head women's basketball coach Becky Burke and her wife, Savannah, are celebrating some major news, and they're not going to let the haters spoil it.
"Our happiness isn't yours to approve. 🩷," Burke, 36, wrote via X on Wednesday, June 10, two days after announcing that she and Savannah are expecting their second child.
She posted a lengthy statement alongside her post where she revealed that the couple's announcement came with "some of the most hateful comments we've ever seen."
"Let me be VERY clear," Burke wrote. "Our announcement is about something much bigger than us. Representation matters. Visibility matters. As a public figure, I take great pride in representing my community and helping create that visibility. Our announcement is for people who have spent years wondering whether a future like this was possible for them. It's about showing people in our community that families like ours exist, and they are real, and that they deserve to be celebrated too."
She continued, "Maybe it would have been easier to take my post down. To be ashamed. But if you think that, you clearly don't know me. I will not let hate win. I will stand up and speak for those in our community who can't. At the end of the day, this isn't about politics or proving a point. My focus will remain where its slings: on my growing family, our incredible support system and continuing to live authentically."
Burke's impassioned statement came after she and Savannah shared the big news with a series of photos with their son Banks, 2. In one of them, Savannah is holding a sonogram photo while Banks reaches over and pokes her belly. Another photo reveals that his shirt says "big brother."
"Burke family update! 🩷 ," they captioned the post. "Baby girl coming December, 2026!"
While Burke's statement came with another dose of hate, the vast majority of the comments were positive, congratulating the couple on their announcement. That included a message from Stephanie Norman, associate head coach at Arizona State University.
"We may be rivals, but she is my player and my friend," Norman wrote. "She and Savannah are amazing parents! ❤️."
Burke is a former University of Louisville guard who was on the Cardinals team that advanced to the 2009 National Championship game. Norman was an assistant coach on that team.
Burke then began coaching in 2013, climbing the ranks to take her first head coaching job in 2016 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Her success at the University at Buffalo, which included a 2025 WNIT championship, helped her land the Wildcats job, where she went 12-18 in her first season.
