North Myrtle Beach museum: ‘Little museum that did’ secure Bob Hope exhibit
North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum has the honor of being the first facility on the East Coast to display Bob Hope, An American Treasure. The exhibit includes more than 170 artifacts, 200 photos and seven videos and is so popular that the exhibit’s stay was extended to Sept 18.
“We are the little museum that did,” says Jenean Todd, executive director of the museum since its opening in 2013. She explains that she began her quest to acquire the traveling exhibit two years ago, which World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla., created.
Although Hope lived to be 100 and is recognized for entertaining U.S. military throughout the world, most millennials don’t know who he was and people who remember the entertainer, don’t know much about his life, Todd said. Tidbits like:
▪ His birth name was Leslie Townes Hope
▪ He was born in Eltham, England, the fifth of seven sons
▪ His family immigrated to Cleveland, OH in 1907
▪ He is the only honorary veteran in the U.S.
▪ He is an honorary member of the Blind Golf Association
It takes about an hour and a half to see the entire exhibit, which covers nearly all of the 3,000 sq. ft. of the museum’s display space.
Some of Hope’s one-liners that still make people break into laughter are, “I left England when I was four because I found out I could never be king,” and “I thought about running for the presidency, but my wife said she wouldn’t want to move into a smaller house.” The exhibit includes many more.
“It’s been so exciting for me,” Todd says. “The best part is hearing people laugh.”
