Shipwreck exhibit added to museum attractions | North Strand Roundup
Damselfish and Permit fish, two spiny lobsters and other indigenous fish are among the examples of marine life chosen for the 700-gallon aquarium at Shipwrecks, the new exhibit at Museum Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony May 27 marked its Grand Opening.
“Our coast is known as the ‘Graveyard of the Atlantic’ and is littered with many shipwrecks,” said Terry Bryant, executive director of Ocean Isle Museum Foundation Inc. “Each ship has a story and becomes an educational teaching moment.”
Since part of the museum’s mission is educate visitors about our coastal region, the exhibit is appropriate, she said.
Bryant began to fashion her vision of Shipwrecks two years ago,
Drew Reger, former foundation board member, assisted her and provided needed funding. The colorful fabrication by Butch Trelove, which includes a portion of a ship’s paddlewheel, is flanked on one side by a slide show of shipwrecks and on the other by a map with descriptions of shipwrecks off the North Carolina coast.
“It’s an ever-changing exhibit as shipwrecks are found,” Bryant said.
The museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary and offers a variety of exhibits. A popular one is touch tank feeding in which visitors can feed horseshoe crabs, urchins, sea stars and other marine life in the tank.
“It’s such a hands-on attraction,” said Gail Ehrhardt, volunteer at the museum for more than 10 years. “If they get an interest at an early age, children can learn so much [about the fish].”
Ingram Planetarium, the museum’s sister facility in Sunset Beach, N.C., offers a variety of programs and exhibits on space. In addition “experience music in motion” at the Thursday and Friday laser music shows.
