Concert calendars packed for bigger city venues in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
No time is better to begin marking up your new 2016 calendars to schedule easy escapes for for the first few months to catch concert and play tours that stop at bigger city venues across the Carolinas.
Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland will play Feb. 4 at the Florence Civic Center, also where the Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard concert postponed from Oct. 15 is rebooked for May 19. Nearby, the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center will host Starship featuring Mickey Thomas on Feb. 11, and Don McLean on April 2, the latter a benefit for the university foundation’s scholarship fund.
In scanning other venues, consider Cirque du Soleil’s “Toruk – The First Flight,” Feb. 25-28 at the North Charleston Coliseum; Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman, Feb. 28 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville; “Disney on Ice: Frozen,” April 13-16 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia; Johnny Mathis with the N.C. Symphony, Feb. 19-20 at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, in Raleigh; AC/DC, March 14 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex; and Diana Ross on Feb. 6, and Jerry Seinfeld, Feb. 11, at the Savannah Civic Center in Georgia.
Fans of the decades-old, pop-rock band Chicago – who, April 8, will finally be welcomed this year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland – could hear some of the band’s hits on Jan. 21 in Fayetteville, N.C. That’s when Peter Cetera, the former original bassist and co-lead singer, will play the Crown Complex, and two of four co-founders still with Chicago – Lee Loughnane and Robert Lamm – have said in published reports the group would welcome Cetera to join them for the rock hall induction ceremony in New York, and possibly a performance there.
Duran Duran – with four of its original five members: Simon Le Bon on vocals, Nick Rhodes on keyboards, John Taylor on bass, and Roger Taylor on drums – will have the first U.S. date of its Paper Gods Tour across North America on March 28 at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Also in the 1980s vein: Starship fans who want to catch another concert with such hits as “We Built This City,” “Sara” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” – or who can’t get to Florence next month – can see the group headline North Myrtle Beach’s annual Mayfest on Main, May 7 for free, with Dr. W and Mother’s Finest opening.
