Planetarium, sister museum open extra days next week

Two sister entities in southern Brunswick County, N.C., have extra hours next week, with schoolchildren on vacation until after New Year’s, and this schedule through Jan. 2 (but closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1).

Ingram Planetarium, 7625 High Market St., Sunset Beach, has a yuletide schedule in its Sky Theater dome

▪ “Let It Snow – A Holiday Music Journey,” noon and 4 and 7 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and on Dec. 28-30. Also, “Laser Holidays” 6 p.m. those days weekly, but not on Dec. 24.

▪ Thursdays and Dec. 28 – “Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure” 1 p.m., “Undiscovered Worlds” 2 p.m. , and “Oasis in Space” 3 p.m.

▪ Fridays and Dec. 29 – “Dinosaur Passage to Pangaea” 1 p.m., “Dynamic Earth” 2 p.m., and “Seven Wonders” 3 p.m.

▪ Saturdays and Dec. 30 – “Dinosaur Passage to Pangaea” 1 p.m., “Back to the Moon for Good” 2 p.m., and “Two Small Pieces of Glass” 3 p.m.

The Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 E. Second St., Ocean Isle Beach, is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, as well as Dec. 28-30.

Special programs, free with admission, include:

▪ “Space Racers,” a series of animated educational movies for preschoolers, 11 a.m. Thursdays.

▪ Touch-tank and aquarium feeding, 11 a.m. Saturday.

▪ Children’s craft or activity, 11 a.m. Saturdays, changing weekly.

Each planetarium show, and museum admission,. is $9 for ages 13-62, $8 ages 62 and older, $7 ages 3-12, and free ages 2 and younger.

Jim Ellis’ photo showcase at Waccamaw Library

One more week remains to see a photo exhibit by Jim Ellis, the Waccamaw Library Photographer of the Month.

Ellis a Pawleys Island resident, with many images reflecting Lowcountry vistas through nature and travel, even had his own dark room as a teen to print his own pictures in the era before digial photography.

Visit the host site, Georgetown County Library’s new Waccamaw Neck branch, 41 St. Paul Place, Litchfield Beach, off Willbrook Boulevard. Next week, it’s open 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Ice awaits skaters for easy escape to Florence

Anyone who loves ice skating, or still has the urge to try gliding on ice, has some a few more sessions to consider in an easy escape west.

The Florence Civic Center, 3300 W. Radio Drive, at Interstates 95 and 20, has a full-size rink open for two-hour sessions:

▪ 3 and 6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and Jan. 2.

▪ 6 p.m. Dec. 29-31.

First of four fall art exhibits about to close

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum’s quad of fall shows will soon reach its last hurrah:

▪ Contemporary Conversations II,” with about 40 works by S.C. artists, in final days Saturday-Sunday.

▪ Three showcases of major facets in S.C. history: “Rice: Paintings by Jonathan Green,” “Indigo: Works in Denim by Jim Arendt” and “Remnants of the Rice Culture: Photographs by David Shriver Soliday,” all through Jan. 7.

Paint your own pottery at Harry the Potter

Anyone who might like to create art to take home might enjoy a visit to Harry the Potter, a paint-your-own pottery studio.

Outside of the actual holidays, the shop is open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays. Also, its next “Ladies/Date Night” is booked for 7-9 p.m. Jan. 14.
