Horry County Parks and Recreation Department offers holiday fun times during December. Alyssa Craft, parks and rec program coordinator at C.B. Berry Recreation Center, Vereen Memorial Gardens, Little River, says children can participate in a number of scheduled activities. The annual lighting of the 40-foot tree will take place in front of the Berry Recreation Center at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The North Myrtle Beach High School band and the North Strand United Methodist Church chorus entertain people as they gather for the ceremony. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will follow on a first come-first served basis. Santa will be on hand for pictures and conversation with the children.

Those 5-12 years can have breakfast with Santa from 9-11 a.m. Dec. 12 at J. Bryan Floyd Community Center, 1030 Possum Trot Road, NMB. Biscuits, sausage biscuits, orange juice and hot chocolate from Bojangles are on the menu. Craft has arranged Winter Wonderland games for the children. They will make a snowflake ornament and snowman stocking, fish for candy canes, shovel race and play marshmallow bingo and a memory game with Hersey Kisses. They can write a letter to Santa and put it in the mailbox provided. Registration is required by Dec. 5. Children leave with their crafts and a goody bag.

The family pet is invited to the Santa Stroll from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 6. Pets receive a stocking they can fill with pet friendly goodies as they wander with Santa along the trails at Vereen Memorial Gardens. People learn about the flora and fauna on the 115 acres of forest and Intracoastal waterfront. Cost is $5 per pet. Register by Dec. 4 to be included. Vendors that provide services for pets will be on hand to answer questions and explain their amenities.

Parents can drop their children off in their pajamas for the Polar Express from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 18 at Berry Center. Snacks, a chocolate bar and pizza will be served, children play games, make crafts and watch the Polar Express movie. Registration is $10 per child by Dec. 11.

“I like to interact with the kids,” Craft says. “It’s fun to hear them talk to Santa and see how excited they get.”
