Community remembers Sept. 11, 2001, with memorials, benefits and more
The anniversary for Sept. 11 remains a special day every year, most of all to remember this country’s aftermath, and rebound from, the terror attacks in 2001.
Besides various local groups’ annual memorial ceremonies, this occasion every September has turned memories of that original negative day of infamy into a plethora of positives, especially for awareness of community causes, especially for veterans.
The Daisy Fair Flowers shop will take part in its third annual “Good Neighbor Day,” part of FTD Florists’ 21st annual continental tradition of giving away flowers to people who in turn relay them to others, simply out of kindness to spread goodwill and friendship in the community.
Daved Kinard, The Daisy Fair manager, said Wednesday morning that 20,000 roses of “every color you could possibly imagine” were “packed full” across two coolers. As of 8:30 a.m. Friday, bundles of six flowers will be available for free per person, while supplies last, with the lone request that the recipient keep one, and give the others away to five different people.
For the second straight year, donations raised will go to Canine Angels Service Dogs of North Myrtle Beach, which rescues dogs from local shelters to socialize and train to serve veterans and first responders with disabilities, Kinard said, also grateful for help from Goldfinch Funeral Home and Hillcrest Cemetery, both of Conway.
Kinard said the flower relays would start Thursday, with delivery of 500-600 to local nursing homes. He called this overall community effort “an amazing thing,” especially because of the individuals “who call us after the fact” because they had received a flower “just for no reason whatsoever.”
“People just love getting that kind of surprise,” Kinard said.
United Way of Horry County already has lined up about 300 volunteers spread across several projects in its annual “Day of Caring,” a campaign kickoff, which this year, includes good deeds at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club at 1415 Second Ave., Conway.
Other events on Friday hit the road or stage, continuing to rack up mileage, such as the third annual Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson 9/11 Memorial Ride, in support of the Horry County Firefighters Relief Fund, and the 14th annual “Local Heroes’ Benefit,” benefiting three charities: Horry/Georgetown Counties’ Fire & Life Safety Expo, the Georgetown Sheriff’s Office “Shop with Santa” program, and Rolling Thunder S.C. Chapter 3.
