Nicole Richie and Her Daughter Kate, 18, Are the Ultimate Red Carpet Duo
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's daughter, Kate Madden, hit the red carpet with her stylish mom.
Kate, 18, who is the daughter of the reality star and the Good Charlotte singer, made her first appearance in two years on the red carpet at the Stop! That! Train! world premiere at Harmony Gold on May 18 in Los Angeles, California. Sporting pin-straight hair just like her mom, Kate went raven-haired for the occasion, pairing her dark locks with a strapless leather dress and black boots. Richie went for polka dots and a matching head scarf alongside her daughter.
Why Did Kate Change Her Name?
Back in January, it was revealed when Richie tagged her daughter in a post celebrating her 18th birthday that she doesn't go by the name she was given at birth, Harlow Winter Kate. Instead, she chose to go by Kate, her middle name.
"Yeah, she goes by her middle name," Richie told PEOPLE. "She has her whole life."
Madden said on Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde podcast this past March that "she's been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade."
"She chose it," he said. "She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher's like, 'Kate's doing great. She's so nice.'"
What Has Richie Said About Raising Teenagers?
Since Richie knows a thing or two about being a teen, she expressed in the past that she wouldn't hesitate to be honest with her kids.
"I just so clearly remember what it's like to be a teenager. It feels like it happened yesterday for me. And they know everything I did," she expressed to Glamour. "I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I've actually found freedom in that."
