Petra Nemcova, Who Survived a Tsunami by Clinging to a Tree for 8 Hours, Is More Gorgeous Than Ever

Petra Nemcova may be known as a supermodel and survivor, but she's looking better than ever in 2026.

The Czech beauty, 46, rose to stardom as a supermodel who hit the runways and pages of magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Elle. However, her name became synonymous with the horrific 2004 tsunami in Thailand when she miraculously survived after clinging to a palm tree for eight hours with serious injuries. 22 years later, Nemcova is back in the spotlight, and looking incredible. The beauty attended the Philantropica Boat Party during the 79th Cannes Film Festival aboard the Alfa Nero on May 19, and showed that a simple cocktail dress can be elegant and classy.

What Happened to Nemcova During the 2004 Tsunami?

In 2004, Nemcova and her boyfriend, fashion photographer Simon Atlee, were on vacation in Thailand when the tsunami ripped through their bungalow.

"I went into this stillness, into almost like a meditative state, because I knew if I start panicking, you lose more energy," Nemcova told ABC at the time. "And I needed all my energy to keep alive."

Nemcova clung to a palm tree for eight hours while Atlee was swept away. She had suffered a shattered pelvis and internal injuries.

"I couldn't go and swim to them or try to help them because I couldn't move my legs," she told Diane Sawyer in their original 2005 interview.

Looking Back on the Tragedy, 20 Years Later

Nemcova was rescued by strangers who gave her clothing and put her on a floating mattress.

"Those people were ready to risk their lives for strangers," Nemcova shared with ABC. "And that shows you the best of humanity."

Looking to help others like she was once helped, Nemcova now runs All Hands and Hearts, an organization that supports people devastated by natural disasters.

"The two, three months after natural disasters, that's usually the time when ... different organizations leave," Nemcova told ABC in an update for the 20th anniversary of the tsunami. "And if there is no more support from organizations, you are like, 'How [am] I ever gonna rebuild my life?'"

Now a married mother, Nemcova is continuing the fight to help others affected by tragedy.
