Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Give Fans Another Reason to Love Their Marriage
To date, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been married for nearly four decades. Besides sharing a bathroom, perhaps another secret to their wedded bliss is their enduring support for each other's career goals. This summer, Hanks will further demonstrate his love for his wife and her music career by joining her on tour.
"Are we? Okay. I do what I'm told," Hanks told PEOPLEabout his and Wilson's upcoming tour plans. He added, "She's on tour; when she's on tour, I'm not working."
Wilson is gearing up for a cross-country tour to support the release of her latest album, Sound of a Woman. Her doting husband explained to PEOPLE at the premiere of the country singer's Broadway show, Celebrity Autobiography, just how "proud" he is of his wife's varied accomplishments. "I am entertained. I am gasped, and often I'm also left at home when she gets up and takes care of business," he explained. However, this summer that won't be the case, as the pair will hit the road together for cities including Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Nashville.
Wilson and Hanks' love runs deep. The Hollywood couple met and became friends in 1981 on the set of the ABCsitcomBosom Buddies. Hanks starred in the leading roles of Kip Wilson and Buffy Wilson for two seasons, while Wilson guest-starred in one episode. At the time, Hanks was married to his college sweetheart, Samantha Lewes, who passed away in 2002.
Eventually, Wilson and Hanks made their relationship public in 1986 and married in 1988. They share two sons: Running Pointactor Chester "Chet" Hanks and actor/cinematographer Truman Theodore Hanks. Hanks also has two children from his previous marriage-Fargo actor and director Colin Hanks and prominent writer/journalist Elizabeth Hanks.
In April, during her Sound of a Woman: Rita Wilson in Conversation event with Demi Moore, Wilson revealed two requests she had asked of her husband should she be the first to pass away.
"One is that you should be sad for a very, very long time," she said of the first request, with the second being that a "party" should be thrown in her honor to mark "a celebration of life." "I want it to be about people telling stories and joy and remembering me in that way. And I think people, a lot of people want that, you know? I think there's room for that," Wilson said.
Rita Wilson's album, Sound of a Woman, and tickets to her accompanying tour are all on sale now.
