Paul Simon, 84, Reveals Song of His That Will 'Last 100 Years'
Paul Simon shares in an elite company of singer songwriters. I've always held him in the same breath as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. All three emerged out of the '60s by fording a unique voice, and showing what the song can truly be capable of as a medium.
Regrettably, Simon is the one I am the least familiar with out of these musicians. I have, of course, listened to his work with Art Garfunkel, and I have appreciated it for years. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Wednesday morning, 3AM" are some of the best pieces of singer songwriter music to emerge out of that decade. Simon is a key figure within the songwriting story, and a necessary study for anyone hoping to understand the way music has evolved.
All the way to today, Simon has continued his career, releasing his album "Seven Psalms" in 2023, and touring ever since. As he reaches the later years of his career, Simon has been reflecting on what he has left behind. In an upcoming interview with Anthony Mason on his show "Alchemy with Anthony," Simon reflected on one of his most accomplished songs, "The Sound of Silence."
The teaser post showcases the story of how the legendary song came to be. As the story goes, Simon wrote the song at age 22 in a bathroom after being inspired by the echo inside, What came out of it is one of the defining folk songs of the '60s.
Simon went on to say that out of any of his songs, "The Sound Of Silence" has the best chance of lasting "100 years."
Fans took to the comments to react to this statement, sharing in agreement and even bringing up more of Simon's timeless work.
"I'm 73 this August, so that was a long time ago. Paul's music holds up remarkably well. I don't think he has to worry about his music being around for 100 years. It's timeless."
"I think there's a number of his songs that will last a hundred years."
"I love the song the flower never bends with the rainfall.. also from that same album. Amazing songwriter. I love Paul Simon!"
I think I can agree that Simon's songs are safe from being forgotten. He is a timeless, beautiful writer that changed music forever with his words.
