Costco Brings Back Durian Ice Cream – And Fans Are Predictably Divided: 'A Solid No'

For millions of people across the globe, durians remain something of a taboo delicacy. An incredibly delicious and refreshing fruit hailing from Southeast Asia, durians are perhaps more commonly known for its pungent, almost unbearably unpleasant smell.

While some restaurants outright ban the presence of durians due to its overpowering aroma, many people continue to find the fruit a worthwhile treat to enjoy at any time of the year.

With that being said, Costco has left fans more than a little divided with its return of a certain durian-inspired dessert.

According to Sporked, the iconic warehouse supplier has once again stocked up on Maven's Creamy Durian Ice Cream.

As the name readily suggests, Maven's Creamy Durian Ice Cream features a similar flavor profile as its infamous fruit counterpart. Fortunately, though, the ice cream incorporates only a hint of the notorious aroma present in actual durians, so you needn't worry about the smell of onions or sweaty gym socks as you sit down to enjoy.

Yet even then, most Costco members on social media have maintained a somewhat divided stance when it comes to the returning treat. While some are all for the ice cream's restock, other, more skeptical users expressed their apprehension about Costco's returning dessert.

"Has anyone tried the durian ice cream? The consensus seems to be a solid no," one account wrote on Reddit.

Though some shoppers maintained a hardline stance against the ice cream, others called it a perfect introduction to durian itself, complimenting the dessert for its distinct flavor and its lack of a strong smell.

"If you ever wondered what durian tastes like, this ice cream is the gateway for it," one user wrote. "The fruit is arguably more difficult to eat because the natural smell can get overpoweringly pungent. The ice cream's smell is much milder in comparison, but the flavor is still there and it packs a punch."

"It's an acquired taste, I love durian and enjoy this ice cream very much!" another account agreed. "It sells like hotcakes at the local Costco stores."
