A Myrtle Beach staple for 22 seasons, Alabama Theatre performer is ‘hanging up’ his boots
A Myrtle Beach staple for more than two decades is “hanging up” his boots — for now.
“I will not be returning to The Alabama Theatre for next season,” Greg Rowles, a singer, said in a Facebook post Tuesday morning. “It’s time for me to hang up my boots there and go on to new things. But I have enjoyed all 22 seasons I’ve been there.”
Rowles will continue to perform at the theater through the end of the year, with his last act coming Jan. 1, according to a news release from Alabama.
“We at the Alabama Theatre have loved working with Greg,” said Bob Wood, president of the Alabama Theatre, in a prepared statement. “He has been our longest-performing cast member and Master of Ceremonies in the theatre’s history. We support Greg and wish him great success in his future endeavors.”
In his Facebook post, Rowles thanks the whole Alabama Theatre family for his experiences there.
“I love you all, and I’m always all things Alabama and I love it there,” he said.
Despite leaving the venue, it appears Rowles is merely preparing for a new route.
“Although the theater’s ‘Goodwill Ambassador’ will be bidding farewell from his daily performances at the Alabama Theater, he is just preparing for his second act,” The Alabama Theatre’s news release states.
Rowles doesn’t specify what’s next for him, but he teased that he has big news coming soon.
“I’ve got some exciting news to share in the next coming weeks and I’m looking forward to doing that,” he said in the Facebook post. “Until then, come on out and see ‘The South’s grandest Christmas show.’ ... Thank you so much for your support of me and (my wife Brandee).”
Rowles, who has also been known for local commercials and his roles on WFXB Fox TV Weekday mornings, Carolina AM and weeknights for Not the News, also served as an emcee while playing guitar, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, dobro and harmonica at Alabama Theatre.
Rowles, a South Carolina Entertainment & Music Hall of Fame inductee, will continue to host special events at Alabama Theatre, according to the news release.
“Greg is looking forward to traveling more with his wife for future performances, spending time with his three kids, four grand pups and taking time to enjoy the music,” the news release states.
