Brookgreen to unveil two new exhibits

Brookgreen Gardens will open two new exhibits Saturday, going through July 26:

▪ “Carolina Roots: Works by Sigmund Abeles and Grainger McKoy,” with paintings, prints, and drawings, and sculptures in wood, bronze, and resin. Abeles, a printmaker, painter, and sculptor, grew up in Myrtle Beach, and McKoy, is a sculptor from Sumter.

▪ “Antebellum Waccamaw: Paintings and Drawings by Emily Esdaile Weston,” of local vistas from the 1840s-’60s. Weston was the British wife of Plowden C. J. Weston, who in the 19th century, owned Laurel Hill Plantation, the north section of Brookgreen Gardens’ property.

Both are free with garden admission, which lasts seven days – $15 ages 13-64, $13 ages 65 and older, and $7 ages 4-12 – as are a host of other daily activities:

▪ Huntington Sculpture Garden Tour, 11 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

▪ “Mother Nature’s Cafe” animal feeding, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

▪ “Meet the Animals” talk, 2:30 p.m.

▪ Children’s Discovery Room , noon-4:30 p.m.

▪ Gullah Program, 1 p.m. Wednesdays (but not May 27), with Ron Daise, Brookgreen’s vice president for creative education.

Nature, pottery fill galleries

▪ The Rice Museum’s Prevost Gallery, , 633 Front St., Georgetown, will have an opening reception 2-4 p.m. Saturday for an exhibit by about 25 members of the Myrtle Beach region in the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association (www.cnpa.org). The display, by a group focused on nature photography, will continue through June 13. Gallery open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, and 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sundays, with free admission.
