Where SC’s Dustin Johnson, Jacob Bridgeman stand for Masters final round
A flying finish turned frustration into elation for Jacob Bridgeman during Saturday’s third round of the 90th Masters.
The former Clemson star from Inman who is playing in his first Masters birdied four of the final eight holes to post a 3-under-par 69 and move into position for a top-20 finish Sunday.
Meanwhile, the other South Carolinian to make the cut, Columbia native Dustin Johnson, struggled to a 3-over-par 75.
“I was kind of bummed that I was even (par) through six,” said Bridgeman, who is 2-under-par 214 for three rounds. “I feel like I should have been a few under. If my putter had cooperated a little bit, I think it would have been really special, but I missed a few short ones.”
Bridgeman, who led the FedEx Cup standings coming into the tournament, started the day at 1-over for the tournament and birdied No. 2. But he bogeyed Nos. 6 and 10 before charging home with birdies on 11, 13, 15 and 18.
“I played probably the best of the week it,” he said. “I hit it really solid, played a lot of really conservative shots. My caddie and I were talking, and I feel like we hit every number we were trying to hit today.”
Bridgeman opened the tourney Thursday with a 1-under 71, then posted a 2-over 74 in Friday’s second round.
Johnson, the former Coastal Carolina star who set the tournament scoring record in winning the 2020 Masters, began Saturday at even par. He opened with a bogey, then reeled off nine consecutive pars. He had bogeys on 11, 12 and 17 along with a birdie at 15 over his final holes and is 3-over 219 headed into the final round.
