How Ethereum and the Blockchain Are Impacting the Entertainment Industry

Global enterprises have begun to turn their attention to blockchain technology, and few have shifted their focus as significantly as the entertainment industry. Leaders like those behind Ethereum intend to reshape how music, gaming, and digital art are communicated online. With each new upgrade to its network and every shift in the Ethereum price, this technology can help facilitate decentralized entertainment.

Ethereum’s Role in the Entertainment Industry

Cryptocurrency might seem an unlikely partner for the entertainment industry, but not every blockchain is designed solely for the exchange of native tokens. This technology facilitates not only the exchange of a wide variety of digital assets but also the development of decentralized applications (dApps), improved security protections, and simplified monetization through smart contracts.

Each of the factors highlighted is compelling for major players in the entertainment industry, and each depends on the unique qualities of blockchain technology. Gaming companies can integrate digital assets to enhance player engagement, and artists can utilize non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to mitigate intellectual property (IP) theft. Whatever the case may be, the industry has an opportunity to benefit.

The Blockchain’s Role in Gaming

The gaming industry is always on the lookout for new monetization strategies, from battle passes to skins. In-game digital assets not only empower players to refine their experience, but they also tend to form the basis of profitability for free-to-play games. With the blockchain, companies can assure players that they actually own these assets, potentially creating additional value for these items based on Ethereum-based NFT technology.

Moving a step beyond free-to-play models, the blockchain could enable play-to-earn models by leveraging the value of these digital assets. Whether by trading and reselling items, earning cryptocurrency, or otherwise, blockchain systems are often used to create more traceable exchange pathways. In some cases, this could reshape the way that gamers engage with the industry.

“Many gaming platforms are integrating cryptocurrencies to facilitate in-game purchases,” Eniola Orebiyi says, “allowing players to buy items, skins, or upgrades using digital currency. This streamlines transactions by reducing the need for traditional payment processors and enhances security… Additionally, some games reward players with cryptocurrency for achieving certain milestones.”

Ethereum’s Role in Digital Art and Entertainment

Although their popularity has waned in recent years, NFTs continue to exert a significant influence on both the art and entertainment industries. These digital assets represent a unique way for artists and creatives to protect their content in online marketplaces. When infringement may occur, the timestamped blockchain ledger has the potential to facilitate improved enforcement of IP protections.

“Digital piracy, fraudulent copies, infringed studio intellectual property, and duplication of digital items cost the US film and TV industry an estimated $71 billion annually,” an article explained. “Enterprise Ethereum allows artists and creators to digitize the metadata of their unique content and manage and store IP rights on a time-stamped, immutable ledger.”

Musicians, filmmakers, content creators, and others can sell exclusive experiences to those who engage in blockchain purchases, which may help strengthen how IP rights are recorded and tracked. By bypassing middlemen, participants in the entertainment industry can more effectively connect traditional entertainment with digital ownership.

How the Blockchain Enhances Fan Engagement

Relying on the unique security features of modern blockchain technology, entertainment companies have begun experimenting with blockchain-based ticketing to prevent fraud. Because transactions can be linked to verified records, companies may have clearer ways to track that an individual’s ticket is their own. Potentially, this could reduce concerns such as scalping, which has become a rampant issue in the music industry.

Anticipated Advancements in Ethereum’s Blockchain

Amid the widespread adoption of blockchain technology in the entertainment industry, leaders like Ethereum are working to enhance the technology. Ethereum’s next upgrade, Fusaka, completed a successful test run on the Holesky test network on October 1 of last year. Additional test runs followed on October 14 and 28, bringing the network closer to a full mainnet launch

“The Fusaka hard fork comes only a few months after Ethereum’s major Pectra upgrade,” Margaux Nijkerk wrote, “and is designed to make things cheaper for institutions using Ethereum. One of the changes it introduces is PeerDAS, a feature… which helps cut costs for both layer-2 networks and validators.”

Ethereum’s Future in Entertainment

Improved IP rights and earning models, as well as fraud prevention, are each significant benefits to the entertainment industry. As a result, blockchain technologies, including platforms such as Ethereum, are increasingly being explored for how they might support new operational models. Fans are presented with new opportunities for engagement, businesses can facilitate transparent exchanges, and the value of digital assets is enhanced. For the entertainment industry, the blockchain represents a new chance to scale for the future.

“Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology,” Orebiyi concluded, “are poised to significantly transform the entertainment industry, offering innovative solutions that empower creators, enhance fan experiences, and streamline operations.”
