Former Socastee football player found dead off Highway 17

Horry County police are investigating after a body was found on Highway 17 Bypass near Palmetto Pointe Boulevard on Wednesday night, according to a release from the Horry County Coroner's Office.

Deputy coroner Darris Fowler said Daniel Doran, 20, was found in a ditch near 4955 Highway 17 Bypass S. about 11 p.m. The cause of death is pending completion of an autopsy, which could be 90 to 120 days, Fowler said.

Maggie Mayeaux, a cousin of Doran, said he was a funny, loving guy.

"His smile was contagious and he cared so much about other people," Mayeaux said.

Tyler Durnell said he and Doran had been friends since middle school. He said they graduated from Socastee High School together.

Duran was a former football player at Socastee High School.

"We would always end up sitting next to each other in class because our last name both started with 'D,'" Durnell said. "Daniel made class fun with someone to talk to."

Fowler said no foul play is suspected at this time.

Doran lived in the Myrtle Beach area, Fowler said. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
