Thursday’s area sports briefs

Rain has muddled the first few week of tennis season for area teams, but that didn’t slow down Conway as they edged St. James 4-3 for their second win of the season.

The Sharks (0-1) were playing their season opener due to Wednesday’s match with Carolina Forest being rained out.

“It’s going to take the tennis players around here a little bit to get in the swing of things,” said St. James coach Lee Cannon, noting that his team was only able to practice once this week and once last week in advance of the match.

It was the combo of Victoria Smith and Haley Cassidy that keyed the way for the Tigers. Smith and Cassidy were the two singles winners for Conway, and also teamed up for a doubles point as they defeated Christina Rivera and Maaike VanOres – a pair of foreign exchange students – 6-2, 6-0. Conway grabbed their fourth and the deciding point in the other doubles match, as Ali Thompson and Maggie Gore split the first two sets with St. James’ Chelsea Lewis and Kaitlin Glover before prevailing 10-4 in a tiebreaker.
