SNOWBIRDS

We didn’t ask ‘ya’ll’ to come south

When did the state of South Carolina start sending out invitations to everyone up north, inviting y'all to come on down to our great state to get away from those cold winter months and be treated like you live here year round?

Was it also written in gold that you would receive all of the perks locals get so you wouldn't want to go back up north?

I do not think that invitation exists. You decided on your own to cross our border. Where you got the idea that we, as locals, get all of these great discounts was created in your own minds.

Do you spend money to buy the daily newspaper so you know where the “buy one get one free” deals are, or what golf courses are offering specials? They do not just offer them to anyone; us locals do not look any different than our welcomed visitors. We also need those coupons.

Yes, there are some things our local drivers license help us receive discounts for, but they are few and far between.

I do have a resolution that will make your yearly getaway from the cold northern weather more enjoyable and affordable: put a different location in your GPS and see how many discounts you get at your new place of choice for snowbirding. I guarantee we will see you back here the following year.

Spread your wings, snowbirds. We do not force you to make the trip down here every year.
