Woman dies in Loris fire
A 38-year-old woman died and a man is hospitalized following a mobile home fire Tuesday night in the Loris area.
Shawna Shirlenne Jackson of Loris died in the fire, and the cause of her death will be determined by an autopsy, according to Tony Hendrick, Horry County Deputy Coroner.
“When the first engine pulled up, it was nothing but a ball of fire,” Chief Jerry Hardee with Loris Fire Department said of the mobile home.
Firefighters were called to Pondview Road about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the mobile home swallowed in flames, Hardee said.
A man, who was later transferred to a burn center in Augusta, Ga., was outside with two children when rescue crews arrived. The man suffered burns while getting the children out and trying to save Jackson, who died inside, authorities said.
There were four people in the mobile home, including the woman who died in the fire, and the two children were picked up by family members, Hardee said.
Hardee said the children were around 10 to 12 years old.
The Loris Fire Department and Horry County Fire Rescue responded to the fire, and no firefighters were injured.
The cause is still under investigation, and the fire is being investigated by HCFR and Horry County police.
“The more damage you have the harder it is to tell exactly what went wrong,” Hardee said on determining the origins of the fire.
