One dead, others injured from head-on car crash in Longs, SC area. Driver allegedly drunk
A Loris man is dead after an allegedly drunk motorist drove on the wrong side of the road and hit his vehicle head-on, said Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
Gary Rodgers, 68, was driving along S.C. 9 near Foxtail Drive late Friday night when he was hit by Mikkhail Coleman, said Willard and SCHP Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. Four people were sent to the hospital, some with critical injuries, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.
The crash involved three cars, with one overturning and at least one person entrapped. Horry County Fire Rescue was dispatched at 11:58 p.m. on Friday.
Coleman, 46, was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated resulting in death on July 27. He was released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center the next day on a $25,000 bond.
Bolt said in a release that Coleman was driving a 2015 GMC SUV with two occupants south in the northbound lane when he struck a 2003 GMC SUV with two occupants. The driver of the second SUV died, the release said.
The accident then caused the 2003 SUV to collide with the a 2012 Nissan Sedan that had six occupants.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Horry County Police are investigating the crash.
