Socastee rolls past St. James, finishes undefeated

History was made Friday night, as the Socastee Braves shut out rival St. James 35-0, finishing the 2012 season undefeated, marking their first-ever perfect season.

“It was great that it was a rivalry and that wasn’t the only thing we were playing for,” Braves coach Tim Renfrow said. “We had a chance at an undefeated season and we pulled it off. I’m proud of these kids.”

The game started out with Socastee defensive back Erick Mortel intercepting a Josh Roper pass, which set the tone a ferocious Braves defense in the shutout.

“Our defense keeps getting better every week,” Renfrow said. “We always go into a game expecting a shutout and these kids executed. We got a quick break early on when Mortel intercepted that pass for a touchdown, and the defense just played well from that point on.”

Later in the first, Socastee quarterback Hunter Renfrow broke free for a 52-yard run that was incidentally called back for a chop block. Socastee’s momentum never shifted, as the Braves drove back down the field. The series ended with Adam Crane pushing the ball in for a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Braves up 14-0 with 6:04 left in the first.

Renfrow put the exclamation point on the win as he took the ball 54 yards for six as Socastee went up 21-0 with 2:32 left in the half.

In the second quarter, Adam Crane scored his second touchdown of the night on a 54-yard run that put the Braves up 28-0 with 10:50 in the half. Daquon Brown scored on a 2-yard run with 4:52 left in the second quarter, concluding the scoring for the game at 35-0.

“It’s an indescribable feeling for these kids,” Renfrow said. “They’ve done a great job each week. We’ve been taking it one week at a time and they’ve done a good job staying focused each week. We have to get back to work Monday and get this thing (the playoffs) going.”

Socastee athletic director David Bennett was on hand to put the cap on a perfect night for the Braves.

“The new season begins tomorrow with the playoffs,” Bennett told the team afterward. “We’re taking it one step at a time. I’ve got all the confidence (in the world) in you guys.”
