High school football roundup | Aynor runs past Mullins

When BJ Haywood returned an interception for 60 yards in the second quarter, the game tilted in Aynor’s favor and the Blue Jackets football team rode the momentum en route to a 58-30 win over Mullins on Friday.

“It was a huge momentum swing in the football game when he made that play,” Aynor coach Jody Jenerette said. “BJ is a great kid. He’s really stepped up for us the last couple of weeks.”

Quarterback Nathan Peeples led the way for the Blue Jackets on offense as he went 5 for 7 with 213 yards and three touchdowns.

“I thought [Peeples] had the best game he’s played since he’s been here,” Jenerette said. “… But I thought we just had a good all-around performance.”

Damion Riggins was one the main contributors for Aynor as he carried the ball 11 times for 141 yards and one score.

“Damion has been solid all season,” Jenerette said. “He was a little bottled up last week and we challenged him this week and it paid off. He’s been a good player all season for us.”

Hunter Windham had 20 carries for 58 yards with one receiving touchdown and had two interceptions on defense. Ronique Smith had 94 yards receiving with one touchdown reception and carried the ball five times for 45 yards.

Aynor improved to 7-2 overall, and 3-1 in Region VIII-AA. The Blue Jackets will host Loris, coming off a loss to Dillon, next Friday in a region showdown.

“They’re a good football team,” Jenerette said. “They had Dillon on the ropes [Friday], and Dillon beat us pretty bad. I hope we can hang around with them and make it a fourth quarter football game.”
