Young Loris squad shuts out Green Sea Floyds

The youth are getting restless in Loris.

Sophomore tailback Levi Moody rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, a sophomore-laden defense posted a shutout and a freshman premiered under center as Loris defeated Green Sea Floyds 25-0 Friday night at Heniford Field.

Moody, also his team’s starting nose tackle, scored two of his touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of 52 and 6 yards.

“My coach told me ‘Wherever you see the referee, just run to him.’ That’s the best advice that I got,” Moody said. “I was able to break off a couple of open field tackles and carry it through for my team.”

His third scoring run was just 2 yards, but was set up by an interception off a tipped pass by linebacker Malik Vereen, who came up short of the goal line on the return.

Moody, who rushed for 124 first-half yards on 11 carries, added a 61-yard touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 17 carries.

“When you are a blocker and you see a guy break one for 40 or 50 yards, that gets you excited,” Loris coach Jamie Snider said. “That’s your version of scoring, knowing that you made those blocks.”

The Lions combined to rush for 326 yards.

“Running the football is about a running back having confidence in an offensive line, and an offensive line having confidence in a running back. I think that all kind of came together for us tonight,” Snider said.

The Lions (3-1) defense answered every challenge the Trojans could concoct, stymieing the ground game, recovering a fumble and intercepting three passes while keeping Green Sea Floyds (1-3) off the scoreboard.

“We want to be good on offense, but we want to be great on defense,” Snider said.

Loris held the Trojans to 78 yards on offense in the first half and 130 in the game.

Freshman Tajay Williams got his first start at quarterback for Loris, replacing Mickel Soles. Snider said the switch wasn’t due to Soles performance on the field, but rather that he is able to make an impact at other positions.
