When the defense is performing at a high level, Georgetown coach Bradley Adams turns to his old-school game plan.
The Bulldogs allowed only one fourth quarter touchdown and rode the bullish running of Julian Lunsford to a 14-8 non-region victory over James Island Charter High School Friday night.
“Our defense was playing well and when our defense is playing well like that we’re going to play old school,” said Adams after watching his Bulldogs improve to 2-1. “We’re going to run it right down their throat, play smash-mouth football and let our defense win the football game.”
Running back Julian Lunsford provided the physical play from the running back position, rushing 30 times for 150 yards and a touchdown.
“Julian is a very powerful young man that just runs north and south really well,” said Adams. “We’re just going to keep pounding him and pounding him and pounding him if our defense is playing this well.”
The Bulldog defenders limited the visitors to three first downs and 66 yards in the first half and the offense took advantage of a pair of James Island miscues in the second quarter to score on back-to-back possessions.
First, Bulldog Michael Billings pounced on a Cornell Stanley fumble at the James Island 13 yard line. Three plays later quarterback Caleb Hughes rolled to his right and found Alvin Walker in the back of the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 10:14 left in the first half.
Next, the Bulldogs took advantage of a 21-yard punt by James Island QB/punter Ty Stubbs. Georgetown drove 45 yards in three plays capped by Lunsford’s 24-yard scamper to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead with 7:32 left in the half.
Still trailing 14-0 going to the fourth quarter, the visiting Trojans controlled the action in the final 12 minutes. James Island drove to a first down at the Georgetown 17-yard line but turned the ball over on downs at the Bulldog 10.
The Trojans drove 42 yards for their lone touchdown on their next possession, capped by Jordan Coaxum-Richardson’s 3-yard run with 3:12 to play. Coaxum-Richardson caught a two-point pass from Stubbs to pull James Island within 14-8.
But Georgetown’s Chris Gamble fell on the Trojans’ ensuing onside kick and the Bulldogs ran out the clock to preserve the victory.
“I’m extremely happy,” said Adams. “That (James Island) is a big school and something we’re trying our best to (make) happen over here in Georgetown is to up our schedule and show we aren’t the same Georgetown we used to be.”
