Three of the Grand Strand’s top seniors on the diamond were named to the American Family Insurance USA South Carolina baseball team, released Wednesday.
Leading the way was Carolina Forest catcher Christian Maggio, who earned first team honors. In his first full season behind the plate for the Panthers, the Charleston Southern signee batted .325 with three home runs and 19 RBIs.
Along with earning All-Region VI-5A and Class 5A all-state honors, he also was selected an S.C. Select all-star.
Named to the second team was Maggio’s Carolina Forest teammate, Bryar Johnson, along with North Myrtle Beach’s Donald Hansis.
This past season, the Panthers’ flame thrower finished with a 4-3 record, striking out 65 batters in 40 1/3 innings. He wound up with a 1.56 ERA, en route to being named an all-region and all-state performer, along with playing on the S.C. Select all-star team.
Last month, Johnson signed with the Kansas City Royals, who selected him in the 20th round of the MLB Draft.
As for Hansis, the Chiefs outfielder batted .305 for this past season with 14 RBIs and eight stolen bases. He will play for Spartanburg Methodist next spring.
