Coastal Carolina roundup (Sept. 11)

Jeff Jacobs joked that Letitia Saayman might just have to start running against the men.

After Friday’s performance there’s reason to believe he may have been only half joking.

Saayman ran away from the field while setting a course record en route to an individual win in the Coastal Carolina Invitational cross country meet.

Saayman’s time of 17:00.92 was more than a minute faster than teammate Kyla van Graan, who finished runner-up in 18:01.79.

“It was a phenomenal race,” Jacobs said of Saayman, whose time would have placed her 20th in the men’s race. “It was pretty incredible.”

The Chants had the top three finishers –with Aynslee van Graan in third (18:25.12) – en route to a team win. Rachel Byrd placed fifth (19:08.07) and Alesia Muklebust placed 10th (20:11.06) to round out CCU’s scorers.

The Coastal men finished second. The Chants’ Josh Small was fourth (16:22.01), Riaz Tyler was 16th (16:47.68), Zach Hensel was 17th (16:52.30), Elijah Shaw was 24th (17:15.82) and Charles Bascom was 40th (18:03.73).
