At some point this season, South Carolina football will break out some old-school looks.
The team Tuesday revealed throwback uniforms, new gear that is an homage to the program’s “Black Magic” 1984 season and “Black Death” defense from 1987. It is part of the Under Armour’s “School Heritage” line of throwback uniforms.
The uniforms are connected to the sport’s 150th anniversary celebration. South Carolina football’s Twitter account unveiled the look with the phrase “Back in Black” and a video opening in the Soda City Market before shifting to the team’s new operations building.
In addition to black uniforms with garnet and white stripes on the sleeves and collar and “Gamecocks” written across the chest, the ensemble includes garnet helmets with the block C logo inside a white circle, as well as white pants, garnet socks and white cleats.
The video and a subsequent press release did not include a date for when Carolina will wear the uniforms, as a school spokesperson said no date has been announced. Coach Will Muschamp told Jamie Bradford of 98.9 FM in Charleston that the throwbacks will be South Carolina’s standard black uniform moving forward.
“Those are my favorite uniforms since I’ve been here. We opened our first season at Vanderbilt and luckily they wore white jerseys and we could wear the black jersey, the garnet helmet and the white pants,” Muschamp said. “And going back to the 1984 season, Under Armour wanted to some form of throwback, and they approached me about it last year, and immediately I said, ‘Just take the 1984 uniform and just do it.’ That sounds good to me. That’s my favorite one.
“That’ll be our black jersey moving forward. We’re the only Power 5 school in the country with the nickname of the Gamecocks, so that’s very fitting for us.”
Fellow Under Armour school Maryland on Tuesday announced it would wear throwback jerseys for its homecoming game on Nov. 2. Notre Dame will also take part in the throwback promotion and will wear its uniforms on Nov. 23. Wisconsin and Northwestern will wear their retro duds on Sept. 28. UA program Utah has will wear its new uniform Nov. 16.
The Gamecocks won eight or more games four times in the 1980s. That run included George Rogers’ Heisman run to start the decade in 1980 and, after a pair of coaching changes, the Joe Morrison era.
Morrison coached the Black Magic 1984 team that went 10-2, starting 9-0 and rising to No. 2 in the polls. A few years later, the team went from a power-running option team to a pair of pass-heavy squads that made bowls in 1987 and 1988.
Images of the uniforms on display at a retailer leaked out online in the last month, finding their way onto a social media post. One USC official lamented the leak on Twitter, suggesting the retail outlet was in error to show the jersey to the public so soon. Under Armour’s official store began selling the jersey online Tuesday morning.
Last season, South Carolina broke out the Script Carolina look just before the season started.
