Michael Olise Incident Prompts FIFA to Enforce New Rule Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is well underway and teams are already getting a firsthand look at some of the rule changes that could influence matches on the sport's biggest stage.

One of those changes came into focus during France's latest international friendly. What appeared to be a routine substitution ended up offering a clear example of FIFA's new effort to crack down on time-wasting, with head coach Didier Deschamps seemingly making sure his players were aware of the consequences.

France defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille on Tuesday, but one moment late in the match generated attention beyond the final score.

As reported by L'Équipe, the situation unfolded after Michael Olise completed a memorable hat trick and was withdrawn from the game. The Bayern Munich star took his time acknowledging supporters inside the stadium before making his way off the field.

Under FIFA's updated substitution rule, players have 10 seconds to leave the pitch once they are replaced. If they exceed that limit, the incoming substitute cannot enter until the next stoppage in play. That proved costly for France, at least temporarily.

Midfielder Manu Koné was ready to come on but was forced to wait on the sideline for more than a minute before being allowed to enter. During that stretch, France played with 10 men while officials enforced the new regulation.

The delay had no impact on the outcome against Northern Ireland. In a tighter contest or a World Cup knockout match, though, losing a player for even a brief period could become a significant talking point.

France Head to World Cup With Momentum

While the substitution incident grabbed attention, France also delivered another encouraging performance as preparations for next summer continue.

Deschamps' side secured a 3-1 victory in his final home match before the 2026 World Cup. Kylian Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring early, but the goal was ruled out because of an offside involving Désiré Doué.

France eventually broke through when Olise found the net after Ousmane Dembélé's effort took a heavy deflection. Northern Ireland briefly believed they had equalized, only for Donley's goal to be disallowed following a foul on Theo Hernandez.

The hosts doubled their advantage soon after halftime. Malo Gusto's delivery created confusion inside the penalty area and Olise punished the visitors with a powerful half-volley.

Kelly later pulled one back for Northern Ireland after good work from Shea Charles, but any hopes of a comeback were short-lived. Olise put the match away with a curling finish to complete his hat trick and continue his rise as one of France's most influential attacking players heading into the World Cup.
