Ecuador Star Moises Caicedo's Heated Exchange With USA Police Before FIFA World Cup
Moises Caicedo and Ecuador are set to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Sunday, taking on Ivory Coast in their Group E opener. Caicedo will be making his second World Cup appearance, looking to build on Ecuador's showing in Qatar in 2022, where the nation earned four points in the group stage but fell short of reaching the knockout rounds.
Caicedo has developed into one of the top players for English Premier League powerhouse Chelsea FC. However, despite winning the Club World Cup last season, Chelsea endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 10th in the Premier League table and missing out on European competition. Now, the defensive midfielder hopes to bounce back on the international stage, looking to help Ecuador make a deep run in the World Cup.
Caicedo and Ecuador have played two international friendlies leading up to the World Cup, including a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia on May 30. Most recently, they defeated Guatemala 3-0 on Sunday in their World Cup send-off match at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio. Caicedo, Ecuador's captain, did not start against Guatemala but came on at the start of the second half, replacing Jordy Alcivar.
However, play was halted for several minutes during the second half after what appeared to be a Guatemala fan storming the pitch. Police working the event in Columbus intervened, restraining the fan before bringing him to the ground.
Caicedo did not appear pleased with how security handled the situation, and as the fan was being restrained, the Chelsea star seemed to exchange heated words with police, potentially urging them to ease up on the supporter. The fan was eventually escorted off the field by security.
"Guatemalan fan invades the pitch during Guatemala vs Ecuador," World Cup 2026 Daily wrote on X. "US Police quickly subdued him, but Moisés Caicedo was NOT happy and openly complained about how the fan was treated."
