Friday's area sports briefs

Junior Reggie Nelson of the Coastal Carolina men’s track & field team tied for 19th in the high jump at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.

Nelson cleared the opening height of 2.05m on his first attempt but then failed on his first two attempts at 2.10m. With his back against the wall, he cleared the height on his final attempt. The bar then moved to 2.15m and he was unable to clear the height on any of his three attempts.

Nelson joins a list of only seven Coastal Carolina men’s track & field athletes who have competed at the NCAA Championships. He will return next season for his senior campaign after a memorable 2014 season in which he won four times, including at the historic Penn Relays.

Minor league baseball

The Carolina League announced the finalized Carolina League All-Star Roster on Wednesday, and Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Chris Garia was added to the roster. Garia is the ninth Pelican selected to the team and takes the place of the injured Pelicans outfielder Nick Williams, who is currently on the disabled list. Garia, 21, picks up his third career All-Star nod.

The primary leadoff batter for the Birds this year, Garia is batting .278 in 48 games with a league-best nine triples to go along with three doubles and a home run. Garia also has a team-best 20 steals, trailing only Lynchburg’s Jose Peraza and Kyle Wren for the league lead.
